Beyond a false choice: categories and dimensions in psychiatric diagnosis.

Debates about psychiatric diagnosis are often framed as a choice between categorical and dimensional models. This editorial argues that dimensional approaches may enrich formulation but do not necessarily replace categorical diagnosis. The challenge is not to choose one over the other a priori, but to evaluate the evidence for a given condition and to clarify the distinct work each approach performs.
