Direct-to-consumer DNA testing has rendered family secrets newly visible through platforms that translate kinship into databases, laboratory-derived genetic profiles, algorithmic relative matching, and quantified displays. This article examines how PBS’s Finding Your Roots imports these genetic profiles and platform outputs into a legacy broadcast format, staging reveal sequences in which probabilistic inference is transformed into publicly authoritative truth. Drawing on a constructionist discourse analysis of four episodes, the article shows how the program assembles genealogical certainty through an evidentiary montage that aligns documents, DNA visualizations, and affective pacing. Page turns, close-ups on percentages or surnames, and host-led narration function as televisual certainty devices, scripting how audiences should interpret and feel about non-paternity events, racial passing, and enslaved ancestry. The analysis positions Finding Your Roots as a convergence text that legitimizes genealogical research and platform authority through television form, while obscuring the infrastructural conditions under which genealogical “truth” is produced.
