An observational study of the prevalence of suicidal behavior and associated factors in mexican adults with diabetes

Diabetes mellitus is a global public health problem with a growing prevalence from 14.4% in 2006 to 18.3% in 2022. An association has been reported with psychological variables such as depression, which is also a risk factor for suicidal behavior. This descriptive and analytical study aims to determine the prevalence of suicidal behavior and analyze associated factors in Mexican adults with DM using data from the National Health and Nutrition Survey 2023 (ENSANUT). A multivariate logistic regression model was developed to identify variables associated with the presence of suicidal behavior. Of the 4,760,777 adults with hyperglycemia, 11.15% reported suicidal behavior. Having a prescription for medication or insulin and feeling sad from 3 to 7 days a week showed associations with suicidal behavior. Results highlight the importance of early detection of risk factors associated with suicidal behavior in individuals with diabetes.
