Perceptions of Masculinity Among Men Convicted of Violence Against Women.

This study examined how men convicted of violence against women construct masculinity. Using purposeful sampling, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 35 men receiving treatment in a high-security forensic psychiatry hospital in Türkiye. The interview data were analyzed thematically. Participants associated masculinity with power, authority, jealousy, protection, and breadwinning. These meanings positioned men as responsible for family order while legitimizing claims to decision-making, supervision, and women's compliance. The study develops the concept of responsibility as entitlement to explain how socially valued masculine duties become moral grounds for control and how violence may consequently be minimized, normalized, or justified.
