Psychological pressure from mentors on career path choices for people with disabilities: A gendered qualitative study.

BackgroundThis study examines the influence of mentorship, psychological challenges, and gendered experiences on the entrepreneurial paths of individuals with disabilities, focusing on a specialized entrepreneurship training program at Technological University Dublin, Ireland.ObjectiveThe research aims to explore how mentorship shapes career choices, the role of psychological pressure in entrepreneurial progress, and the impact of gender dynamics within the entrepreneurial landscape for people with disabilities.MethodsIn-depth interviews were conducted with eight participants (four males and four females with varying disabilities) and four mentors. Thematic analysis was utilized to analyze the data and draw key insights.ResultsThe findings reveal that male participants primarily experienced mentorship focused on skill development, while female participants experienced additional psychological pressure linked to societal gender norms. For some, this pressure acted as a hindrance, while for others, it served as a driving force for personal growth and resilience.ConclusionsThe study underscores the importance of incorporating gender-sensitive mentorship approaches and emotional support into vocational training programs, particularly for individuals with disabilities in entrepreneurship.
