The Lived Experiences of Hispanic Men in Managing Their Type 2 Diabetes: A Phenomenological Study.

INTRODUCTION: Approximately 34 million Americans have diabetes with Hispanics being disproportionately affected. Yet, qualitative research exploring the diversity of experience of having diabetes within Hispanic subgroups or gender-specific experiences is lacking. This study explores the lived experiences of Hispanic men managing type 2 diabetes (T2D) to identify social, cultural, and psychological influences on self-management and inform culturally tailored interventions. METHOD: This phenomenological study utilized purposive sampling to explore the lived experiences of Hispanic men (N = 10) diagnosed with T2D. Data analysis was conducted using Colaizzi's seven-step phenomenological approach. RESULTS: Five themes emerged, highlighting the complex relationship of cultural values, health care barriers, emotional regulation, and social supports in shaping the lived experience of Hispanic men with T2D. DISCUSSION: The findings emphasize the need for targeted, culturally responsive interventions that address structural inequities, including poor working conditions, limited health care access, and mental health barriers, to advance health equity for Hispanic men.
