A unique collaboration between Queensland Health and not-for-profit selectability for delivery of Wise Choices groups for Borderline Personality Disorder: a preliminary study.

ObjectiveThe aim of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness of Wise Choices groups for people with borderline personality disorder or emotional dysregulation delivered through a partnership between Queensland Health and a not-for-profit organisation, selectability (a company name intentionally without a capital S). The project also gathered qualitative feedback on participants' experience of the groups.MethodWe undertook a retrospective data evaluation of Wise Choices participants' pre- and post-group Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K5) scores. A semi-structured focus group was also held for former participants of the Wise Choices groups to gather qualitative data.ResultsK5 scores decreased significantly after completion of the Wise Choices groups. The themes from the focus group were: the groups as a "rollercoaster ride," need for more information pre- and post-groups, experiences of relationships with facilitators and gratitude for and appreciation of Wise Choices.ConclusionsThe Wise Choices program was associated with a significant reduction in psychological distress and was positively received by participants. Qualitative feedback highlighted strong facilitator support and therapeutic benefits and identified areas for improvement in orientation processes and intra- and post-program support. These findings support the program's value as a structured group intervention for individuals with borderline personality disorder.
