The contribution of rare genetic variation to psychiatric presentations: An overlooked curricular topic in residency training.

It is increasingly understood that rare genetic variation confers significant risk for various psychiatric phenotypes, often in combination with numerous comorbid medical problems. As the identification of a pathogenic variant in this context may have important clinical implications, it is imperative that psychiatrists can identify and deliver evidence-based care to affected individuals. However, as little attention has historically been paid to this topic in postgraduate psychiatry programs, trainees typically report feeling ill-equipped to adequately support this patient population. This viewpoint aims to draw further attention to this issue, while outlining key curricular content integral to trainees' development in this respect.
