Adverse Childhood Experiences and Intimate Partner Violence: A Life Course Perspective.

The impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) can significantly affect future intimate relationships. Through a life course theoretical lens, this study aimed to understand how ACEs impact adult intimate partner violence (IPV). Using a qualitative research approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted on 8 victims/survivors of IPV and 2 male advocates for IPV. The data were analysed using content analysis, revealing commonalities in the perception and experiences of survivors on the long-term impact of ACEs on IPV. Several themes related to both the early direct experiences of the victim and indirect experiences of the perpetrator emerged, such as trust/mistrust, poor parent-child attachment/bond, and the increased risk of experiencing future IPV. The findings are consistent with previous research and emphasize the need to critically explore the childhood experiences of perpetrators and victims of IPV for early intervention and prevention. Recommendations for future research and intervention strategies targeted at reducing ACEs were proposed.
