Dual Self-Directed Humor, Humor-Based Coping, Humor Styles, Psychological Distress, and Aggression: Turkish Validation of the Dual Self-Directed Humor Scale.

Humor has been a prolific concept for many years, and with the Dual Self-Directed Humor Scale (DSDHS), it has been discovered that humor can have both deleterious and benign effects. The reliability and the validity of the DSDHS Turkish version were investigated in this study. A total of 407 individuals participated in this study, 269 (66.09%) females and 138 (33.91%) males, with a mean age of 26.37 years (SD = 9.28). The Turkish version of the DSHDS was produced using a back translation process. The construct validity of the DSHDS was examined using exploratory structural equation modeling (CFI = .989, TLI = .982, RMSEA = .063, SRMR = .028) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFI = .945, TLI = .927, RMSEA = .073, SRMR = .073), with satisfactory fit indices. The association between the DSHDS's subscales (deleterious and benign) with psychological distress (stress, anxiety, depression), humor-based coping, and aggression was investigated for criterion-related validity. Aggression, aggressive humor, self-defeating humor, stress, sadness, anxiety, and coping-humor were all positively correlated with deleterious self-directed humor. Aggression, self-enhancing humor, aggressive humor, self-defeating humor, participative humor, and humor as a coping mechanism were all positively correlated with benign self-directed humor. The results of the analyses indicate acceptable internal consistency and construct reliability. The results provide satisfactory evidence of the validity and reliability of the DSDHS Turkish form.
