Parenting Time and Intimate Partner Violence Perceptions in Bangladesh

Abstract Intimate partner violence ( IPV ) is a pervasive issue in Bangladesh. We use the most recent Time Use Survey ( TUS ) 2021 ( N = 17,704) to examine the predictors of IPV acceptance by men and women in Bangladesh. We further investigate whether fathers’ childcare time reduces the acceptance of IPV . Results suggest that men and women are less likely to justify IPV as literacy level, accumulated wealth, and access to information technology increase. An important finding of this study is that men who spend more time with their children are less likely to justify IPV . We argue that this finding is related to the development of a broader egalitarian view of the family. To our knowledge, this is the first study that uses the TUS to examine the partners’ perception of IPV in Bangladesh.
