This technique aims to address the limitations of intraoral scanning in recording edentulous functional peripheral borders. A record base designed from an intraoral scan is digitally modified to incorporate peripheral relief. After the record base is tried in and extensions are verified, border molding is completed using either thermoplastic compound or a heavy consistency of elastomeric material. Once the functional border molding is complete, the record base is digitized and serves as the final impression. The resulting impression records the denture bearing area in a mucostatic state using an intraoral scanner, while simultaneously capturing the extension and dimensions of the peripheral borders in a functional state. This approach may produce a denture with functional borders, adequate extension, and improved retention, thereby overcoming limitations inherent to intraoral scanning of edentulous arches.
