Progress Toward the Health-Related Sustainable Development Goals: A Case Study of the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH).

Collaboration between academic institutions, ministries of health, and international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) is critical to advancing the UN's health-related Sustainable Development Goals (HRSDGs). We describe two decades of collaborations between the WHO and the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH), a partnership between North American universities, a Kenyan university, and the government of Kenya that led to significant gains in HRSDG target areas. With WHO engagement, AMPATH developed and sustained programs in SDG 3 target areas of HIV care and prevention, maternal and neonatal health, and biomedical informatics that contributed to progress in HRSDGs. This case study of the collaboration between academic institutions, ministries of health, and the WHO demonstrates a model for achieving progress in the HRSDGs that can be replicated.
