Tracking the Fall in Prothrombin Time in Dogs With Anticoagulant Rodenticide Toxicosis Following an Intravenous Dose of Mixed Micelle Phytomenadione.

BACKGROUND: Anticoagulant rodenticide toxicosis causes distruption to vitamin K metabolism, leading to excessive bleeding. Mixed micelle phytomenadione (MMP), administered intravenously, is used to reverse the anticoagulant effects of the rodenticide. In dogs with anticoagulant rodenticide toxicosis, prothrombin time (PT) is measured before and after treatment with MMP to assess whether and when normalization of PT has occurred. KEY FINDINGS: Eleven patients were enrolled, and one dog twice, resulting in 12 patient events. In two cases, PT normalized within 30 min of administration of MMP, seven within 1 h, and one within 2 h; however, apparent adverse reactions were seen. SIGNIFICANCE: Although adverse effects have been reported, coagulopathy can be rapidly reversed in dogs with suspected anticoagulant rodenticide toxicosis with use of intravenous MMP.
