Coaching and its effectiveness in organizations: Reflecting on a decade of research, looking forward to future challenges

Abstract This article reflects on the publication of the meta‐analysis by Jones, Woods and Guillaume (2016) on the effectiveness of workplace coaching in the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology. The authors look back over ten years of research since the publication and consider the impact of the article and its place in the wider development of the coaching literature during that period. Three key themes are revisited in the discussion of the literature: (1) the need for theoretically informed and grounded research into workplace coaching; (2) development of research designs and outcome specification in studies of coaching effectiveness; (3) evidence‐based understanding of the practice of coaching, including the efficacy of different techniques and approaches. Future implications for research into workplace coaching are also explored.
