This Commentary highlights the finding that an increased post-submergence oxidative burst reprograms plant cysteine oxidase (PCO)-group VII ethylene response factor (ERFVII) oxygen sensing, inhibiting PCO activity and transcriptionally rewiring ERFVIIs toward oxidative stress recovery. This redefines ERFVIIs as redox-responsive stress integrators and reveals targets to enhance climate-adaptive stress responses.
