Management of locking compression plate infection with negative pressure therapy in a neonatal foal

Summary A neonatal foal presenting with surgical site infection following internal fixation of a transverse, displaced fracture of the distal third left metatarsus was successfully managed using negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT). Negative pressure wound therapy promoted rapid formation of healthy granulation tissue, resolution of infection and stability of the implant until bone healing was achieved while minimising hospital personal exposure to multiple‐drug‐resistant pathogens.
