Summary Tolpis Adanson is a genus of some 15 species distributed primarily in the Macaronesian archipelagos of the Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira, and Cape Verde Islands. A phylogenomic study resolved Tolpis as monophyletic with the Madeiran endemic species Tolpis macrorhiz a sister to the remainder of the genus. This paper describes the new genus Madeirina to accommodate Tolpis macrorhiz a. The combination of morphological characters distinguishing the new genus from Tolpis sensu stricto is enumerated; the reproductive biology, ecology, chromosome number, conservation status and distribution of the new genus are discussed.
