Purpose As the literature on the learning organization continues to expand, the need to analyze, evaluate and map the research landscape of this field has become apparent. While previous bibliometric reviews have contributed valuable insights, they have been either directed toward specific time spans and particular contexts or limited in their exploration of the field’s intellectual structure. Accordingly, this study aims to address these gaps and present a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the literature on learning organizations indexed in the Web of Science database from 1988–2023. Design/methodology/approach Eight hundred and eighty-two articles focused on learning organizations were analyzed using bibliometric analysis techniques, including performance and science mapping analyses. Findings This study reveals that research on learning organizations has proliferated exponentially over the past 35 years, with numerous authors, journals and countries contributing substantially to this domain of exploration. The findings also demonstrate that authors have employed different diverging perspectives to explore this topic. Furthermore, through document co-citation analysis, two clusters representing the intellectual structure of the learning organization were identified: one focused on the characteristics of the learning organization, and the other was the organizational learning process and its related aspects. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is among the first to analyze learning organization research indexed in the Web of Science database from 1988 to 2023 and to thoroughly explore the field’s intellectual structure through the co-citation analysis.
