A meta-review on zero trust cybersecurity in the US banking sector

Purpose This study conducts a meta-review of the evolution of cybersecurity strategies in the US banking sector, emphasizing the influence of regulatory frameworks and technological integration, particularly the adoption of the Zero Trust framework, a model based on the principle of “never trust, always verify.” Design/methodology/approach Utilizing publicly available data and analysis supported by Large Language Models (LLMs), the research introduces Valeria’s Zero Trust Evaluation Model (VZTEM), a novel framework designed to address sector-specific challenges, including legacy systems and regulatory complexity. VZTEM provides a structured approach for improving cybersecurity infrastructure in banking. The study moves beyond traditional models in behavioral theory by examining how non-reasoned factors, including habits, routines and emotional motivations, influence cybersecurity behavior. Findings Through comparative analysis, the research identifies strengths and critical vulnerabilities in current practices and shows how VZTEM can support more effective implementation of Zero Trust strategies and strengthen organizational resilience. The findings highlight the model’s value for improving risk management, digital integration and public confidence in banking security. Originality/value By offering practical insights and outlining future research directions, the study contributes to understanding cybersecurity behavior and supports efforts by professionals and policymakers to improve protection across the financial sector.
