OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the potential for early intracranial hypertension by analyzing imaging data from patients with craniosynostosis who show normal cranial morphology. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on imaging data collected from patients with craniosynostosis who did not exhibit cranial deformity (the observation group) and from children without cranial diseases (the control group). All participants visited the outpatient department of the Children's Hospital of Fudan University between January 2024 and December 2025. The parameters included optic nerve sheath diameter, skull base thickness, cranial vault bone thickness, foramen ovale cross-sectional area, and ventricular enlargement. Differences between the 2 groups were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 35 patients met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. There were no statistically significant differences in age or gender distribution between the 2 groups (P>0.05), demonstrating comparability. No statistically significant differences were observed in terms of optic nerve sheath diameter, cranial vault thickness, foramen ovale cross-sectional area, or incidence of ventricular enlargement (P>0.05). However, the observation group had a significantly thinner skull base than the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Intracranial hypertension may persist in patients with craniosynostosis who exhibit a normal head shape.
