Factors Associated with Burnout and Stress Symptoms in Brazilian Workers: Evidence from a Prospective Longitudinal Study from 2020 to 2023.

OBJECTIVES: This prospective study aims to identify factors associated with burnout and stress symptoms. METHODS: 1,211 Brazilian workers were included at baseline and 467 at follow-up. A sociodemographic and occupational questionnaire, Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire II-Br (COPSOQ II-Br), and Work Ability Index (WAI) were used to collect data. Multivariate logistic regression was applied. RESULTS: Age was a protective factor for stress (OR=0.97, 95%CI=0.95-0.99) and burnout (OR=0.96, 95%CI=0.93-0.98); as well as family income (OR=0.53, 95%CI=0.31-0.89; OR=0.48; 95%CI=0.27-0.86). Change in workload was associated with stress (OR=2.27, 95%CI=1.35-3.83) and burnout (OR=1.83, 95%CI=1.03-3.23). Education sector was associated with burnout (OR=2.87, 95%CI=1.49-5.54), as well as fear of COVID-19 contamination (OR=1.97, 95%CI=1.12-3.46) and anxiety (OR 3.89, 95%CI=1.65-9.22). CONCLUSION: This study highlights factors associated with burnout and stress in Brazilian workers.
