The rising prevalence of hyperuricemia poses health risks and financial burdens, particularly among overweight or obese individuals. This study aimed to identify factors associated with hyperuricemia in overweight or obese adults of Shenzhen, China. This is a population-based cross-sectional study conducted in Longhua District of Shenzhen, China. Overweight or obese individuals were recruited using a multi-stage stratified random sampling method. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with hyperuricemia. Totally 662 overweight or obese individuals were included, and the prevalence of hyperuricemia was 43.2% (95% CI: 39.4-47.0%). Multivariable analysis showed that female sex was associated with a lower risk of hyperuricaemia (OR = 0.12, 95% CI: 0.07-0.19). Additionally, exposure to secondhand smoke for more than 3 days per week (OR = 1.55, 95% CI: 1.06-2.27) and consumption of more than 75 g of aquatic products per day (OR = 2.30, 95% CI: 1.12-4.73) were associated with a higher risk of hyperuricemia. Sugar-sweetened beverage intake presented a borderline significant association with higher risk of hyperuricemia (OR = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.00-2.11, P = 0.052). The prevalence of hyperuricaemia was high among obese or overweight individuals in Shenzhen, and those with male sex should be given special attention. Secondhand smoke exposure, aquatic products consumption and sugar-sweetened beverage intake may be served as intervention targets to reduce hyperuricemia.
