The Top 100 Most-Cited Papers in Mohs Reconstruction: A Bibliometric Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Prior bibliometric analyses of Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) have examined the field broadly, but none has focused on the reconstructive literature. OBJECTIVE: To identify and characterize the 100 most-cited papers on reconstruction after MMS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Web of Science Core Collection was searched on June 10, 2026, combining an MMS topic anchor with a reconstruction term required in the title, without date restriction. English-language articles and reviews were ranked by total citations. RESULTS: The 100 papers, published from 1991 to 2021, were cited 4,101 times (mean 41.0, median 33.5, range 22-196; citation index mean 2.4). The most-cited was Rohrich and colleagues' 15-year review of nasal reconstruction (196 citations). Dermatologic Surgery published the most papers (32%), followed by Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (11%) and the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (10%). J. F. Thornton was the most frequent author (7 papers), and the United States contributed to 78%. The literature centered on nasal and periocular reconstruction, flaps and grafts, and second-intention healing. Restricting to the 94 original research articles gave essentially unchanged results (mean 40.7, median 33.5). CONCLUSION: This first reconstruction-specific citation analysis maps the influential literature of post-Mohs repair and offers a practical reference for clinicians and trainees.
