(Un)organized protest: introducing the Anatomy of Resistance Campaigns 2.0

Abstract We introduce the Anatomy of Resistance Campaigns (ARC) 2.0 dataset, which records the participation of formal organizations in 32,131 protest events in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean from 1990 to 2017. We identify 2,583 unique organizations, and provide meso-level information such as type, goals, birth date, year of termination, and interorganizational alliances. These data enable researchers to study the differential outcomes of protest episodes with or without organizational presence. The ARC 2.0 dataset allows for the study of the characteristics of all types of organizations that participated in a reported protest event. Our data show, for example, that organizations participate in both maximalist and reformist events, and that organizational involvement is more characteristic of large events (with over 1,000 participants). ARC 2.0 also reveals that, among others, unions and industrial organizations engaged in dissent tend to be relatively long-lived, while revolutionary, separatist, or identity-based organizations typically have a shorter lifespan. ARC 2.0 is the most detailed organization-level dataset with the most comprehensive geographic coverage, facilitating refined theory development and disaggregated analyses.
