Abstract Adult mental health in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a complex issue influenced by various cultural, social, and institutional dynamics that profoundly affect individuals’ experiences and their well-being. Thus, a nuanced understanding of the historical context of adult mental health in the UAE is imperative for understanding the trajectory of certain attitudes, policies, and services that have shaped the current mental healthcare environment in the country. In line with the UAE2030 Sustainable Development Goal 3, prioritizing mental health promotion and well-being is a key objective, underscoring its dedication to fostering a mentally resilient society (United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development). In this regard, the present study interviewed five focus groups comprising forty individuals across four fields of social work practice to critically analyse adult mental health in the UAE. Specifically, the collected data were examined using thematic analysis with a focus on social workers’ experiences and practices. Based on this process, we obtained various initiatives and recommendations to enhance social workers’ contributions to adult mental health in local communities, particularly in the country.
