Abstract “Prologue: Moving into the Great House: A Family Parable” tells the story of the author’s move with her family in childhood from a small, modern house, to a large, old house outside Baltimore, Maryland, and the way it alerted her to the difference made by the size, character, and age of a living space. It recounts the family’s restoration of the dilapidated house, the good years lived in its beauty, and its slow deterioration again, to the point where, after the parents’ death, the adult children must sell it at auction. The house having passed, in its history, from an Anglo-American to an Irish American and then to a Jewish American family, the family wonders, who will inherit it next?
