Abstract An efficient transverse magnetic (TM) mode-pass polarizer based on Si waveguide structures is theoretically proposed via trapping the transverse electric mode with two rectangular Si cavities, which can be used in protective measurements of photon polarization. The optimal wavelength of the proposed TM-pass polarizer can be varied from 1488 nm to 1618 nm via increasing the width of the Si cavities from 460 nm to 540 nm. It is noted that the polarization extinction ratio is 37.7 dB when the operating wavelength is 1545 nm. The proposed TM-pass polarizer can be used in various photonic integrated circuits fabricated on Si-on-insulator wafers.
