Ambiguous Gain Is Associated With Stepfamily Functioning and Youth Well-Being: Leveraging New Theoretical Perspectives in Stepfamily Research

This study foregrounds the concept of ambiguous gain – a situation of systemic relational acquisition marked by factual unclarity – as a distinct theoretical lens for understanding stepfamily formation. Guided by the Contextual Model of Family Stress, we examined ambiguous gain among 507 U.S. adolescents (mean age: 15.36 years; 46% female; 62% non-Hispanic White, 20% Hispanic, 14% non-Hispanic Black, 4% non-Hispanic Asian/other) residing with a stepparent acquired from age 10 onward. Results suggest that stepfamily formation is commonly experienced as an ambiguous gain, with variability linked to adolescent age and the presence of a nonresident parent. Multivariate models revealed that higher levels of ambiguous gain were associated with lower parent-adolescent and stepparent-adolescent relationship quality, greater stepparent involvement in discipline, increased stepparent-adolescent conflict, and elevated misattunement in stepparent-adolescent interaction. Ambiguous gain also predicted numerous indicators of adolescent maladjustment. Taken together, findings highlight ambiguous gain as a salient family stressor with implications for stepfamily functioning and youth well-being. Conceptual and practical implications include targeting ambiguity in interventions to prevent or mitigate some stepfamily challenges. Future research should support ongoing measurement development, explore mechanisms linking ambiguous gain to family stress, and examine strategies for tailored management of relational ambiguity across diverse family contexts.
