Hybrid dialogic member checking in youth care: a feasible approach for time-pressured practice settings

This paper presents ‘hybrid dialogic member checking’, which combines collective resonance with the analytic deepening of qualitative findings through short, in-company dialogic group sessions, hence the term ‘hybrid’. These sessions served a dual purpose: examining how preliminary interpretations resonated with participants’ experiences and generating new, contextually grounded insights. The approach was developed within a longitudinal study of workplace learning cultures in three youth care organizations in the Netherlands, where sustained individual member checks proved difficult to implement. Semi-structured interviews (n = 9) informed dialogic sessions (n = 28) involving original interviewees and additional organizational members. Through a reflexive methodological analysis of session transcripts, field notes, analytic memos, and researcher reflections, we constructed three interrelated dimensions shaping the functioning of the hybrid design: (1) ethical dynamics, including emotional intensity, anonymity, and hierarchical sensitivities; (2) methodological dynamics, in which dialogic resonance supported refinement of interpretations while generating additional situated insight; and (3) relational–practical dynamics, as the sessions fostered engagement and continuity across phases of the broader project. The paper argues that hybrid dialogic member checking offers a feasible and conceptually coherent alternative to traditional individual member checks in applied qualitative research conducted in organizational contexts characterized by high workload and limited protected time.
