Will generative AI-assisted article production create a minority of human writers?

Here, we argue that the concerns of a recent editorial with regards to abuses resulting from a metrics-based academic publishing ecosystem are amplified by academia-wide over-dependence on generative artificial intelligence. We argue that editors, as well as other agents such as authors, reviewers and publishers, have an important role to play in promoting a virtuous ecosystem of academic publishing.
