Electric power outages remain a major challenge across Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), affecting economic productivity, household welfare, and sustainable development. This study examines their nature, causes, socio-economic effects, and coping strategies through a systematic review of the literature. Outages in SSA are characterized by frequent interruptions, load shedding, and grid instability. Synthesising evidence from the existing literature, the study identifies several key drivers of electricity outages, including insufficient generation capacity, aging transmission infrastructure, hydropower variability, and institutional governance challenges. Businesses experience reduced productivity and higher operating costs from reliance on backup generators, while households face disrupted services and higher energy expenditure. In response, households and firms have adopted coping strategies including generators and decentralized renewables such as solar photovoltaic systems. Addressing reliability challenges requires sustained investment in infrastructure, improved sector governance, and wider adoption of renewable energy, all essential for growth, poverty reduction, and sustainable development in the region.
