A new ternary hydrogen bonded liquid crystal (THBLC) series is formed between mesogenic aromatic 4-methoxycinnamic acid (4MCA), aliphatic non-mesogenic pimelic acid (PA), and mesogenic 4-n-alkoxy benzoic acids (nOBA, n = 5 to 12). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-Visible spectroscopy, polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) are used to investigate the formation of hydrogen (H) bond, electronic properties, mesophase confirmation and phase transition temperatures, respectively, in the THBLC system. The surface morphology is examined using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) to confirm the homogeneity of the sample. Chemical filtering action is also observed.
