Recently, the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) technologies by foreign language educators has received a rising surge of interest and attention across the world. However, in many educational settings, teachers are not literate enough to employ such tools in their classes. Additionally, access to GenAI tools has not been fairly provided for educators, especially those working in poor settings. To address the gap, this quantitative study examined the GenAI literacy level of English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers who worked in low-resource schools in Turkey. A total of 231 teachers electronically completed a questionnaire on GenAI literacy. The results indicated a low overall GenAI literacy for the participating EFL teachers. In terms of sub- components, ‘GenAI design’ and ‘GenAI evaluation’ had the lowest mean score, while ethics had a significantly high value. The study calls for reorientations of teacher professional development programs in light of GenAI technologies, highlighting literacy in the age of AI.
