Cost-Sharing Safety: A Preliminary Evaluation of the John May Farm Safety Fund.

OBJECTIVES: The John May Farm Safety Fund is a cost-sharing program designed to reduce farmers' barriers to implementing workplace safety solutions. The goal of this study is to understand participants' motivators for enrolling in the Program, as well as the primary and secondary benefits they enjoyed as a result. METHODS: Qualitative content analysis was used to review narrative components of 50 participant records, including applications, farm safety consultations, and follow-up customer satisfaction surveys. RESULTS: Findings of this study demonstrate that farmers cited the wellbeing of humans and animals as a primary motivator for enrolling. Additionally, farm transitions and aging equipment played a considerable role in the need to improve safety systems. In addition to increasing safety, improved efficiency and productivity were documented as important benefits of engaging in this Program. CONCLUSIONS: This preliminary evaluation of the John May Farm Safety Fund demonstrates its' importance to the farm community, in terms of safety, productivity, and long-term sustainability of farms. Findings suggest that expansion of the John May Farm Safety Fund would be a valuable endeavor.
