In the last few years, zine-making activities have gained considerable momentum in higher education, used across a wide range of disciplines and in a variety of ways, as a research method, a means of assessment, or to stimulate reflection and critical thinking. This paper focuses on how an academic developer - the author - has integrated zine-making into a staff-facing postgraduate award in digital education to facilitate reflection on the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Whilst this activity is intentionally analogue, the viability and value of creating digital zines is considered via two separate zine-making enquiries, using a framework adapted by Brown et al. (Citation2021). The paper explores how zines not only serve as a powerful tool for developing visual literacy, but also how materials and methods may drive content and meaning. The conclusion draws together some considerations for integrating zine-making into teaching and learning practice.
