Training Adaptable Astronauts: Integrating Ecological Psychology into Human Performance in Space Missions

原始摘要(英文原文)· Original abstract
Astronauts must acquire, adapt, and maintain complex perceptual–motor skills while operating in environments that are novel, variable, and challenging. With human spaceflight shifting from low-Earth orbit missions to long-duration expeditions on the Moon and Mars, these demands intensify as astronauts face altered gravitational fields, along with other challenges like communication delays and high-stakes technical tasks. Despite decades of advances in engineering and physiology, astronaut training has only minimally integrated evidence-based principles from ecological psychology, that views skill learning as the ongoing attunement to affordances, which are action possibilities that emerge from the interaction between the individual and the environment. This paper examines how ecological frameworks, such as ecological dynamics, the constraints-led approach, perception–action coupling, affordance theory, and representative design, could refresh the design of astronaut training. Drawing on examples also from elite sport, ecologically grounded methods such as representative simulations, variable constraint manipulation, and affordance-rich training environments, are proposed to enhance adaptability, skill retention, and autonomy in long-duration missions. These approaches aim to ensure that astronauts remain perceptually attuned and operationally resilient in the unpredictable conditions of deep-space exploration.
