Ibrahim Traore: Burkina Faso’s saviour, dictator or revolutionary anti-imperialist

Following the worsening armed uprising in Burkina Faso in 2022, Captain Ibrahim Traore, the head of the special forces’ unit known as Cobra toppled the embattled government. took charge and dissolved the transitional government and suspended the constitution. This article aims to critically examine the leadership approach of Ibrahim Traore as a military head of state, which transcends beyond his personality. Through a tripartite lens that considers him a saviour, a dictator or a revolutionary anti-imperialist. In a broader sense, Traore’s rise is contextualized against the backdrop of the escalating jihadi violence, deep seated institutional fragility and widespread public disillusionment with post-colonial governance. The core argument of this piece posits that Traore embodies an ambivalent figure whose appeal as an anti-imperialist, Pan-African revolutionary, and a modern successor to Thomas Sankara is simultaneously the foundational source of his popularity and justification for his authoritarian methods. This article integrates qualitative data drawn from a critical review of news articles and editorials from major global and African outlets, journal articles and public statements and speeches by Ibrahim Traoré, and other relevant online sources including social media discourse and analytical reports on the Sahel region.
