In our paper, we begin by examining the foundations of tech oligarchic power through the lens of Andrew Feenberg’s philosophy of technology – particularly his concept of ‘operational autonomy’. We then introduce the philosophical principles underpinning the digital commons, aiming to demonstrate their potential to challenge tech oligarchies on organizational, ethical, technological, and economic fronts. Finally, we illustrate our argument with specific examples from the digital commons field that exemplify this alternative approach in practice.
