A Step-by-Step Tutorial to Conducting and Interpreting Measurement Invariance Testing for Counselors and Assessment Professionals

Measurement invariance (MI) testing is a critical approach for examining the internal structure validity of test scores and determining whether latent constructs have the same meaning across independent groups or over time. The objective of this instructional paper is to provide a non-technical overview of the best practices for invariance testing within counseling research and practice. The authors provide an illustrative example of MI testing with a sample of 500 randomly selected college students from the 2023–2024 Healthy Minds Study. By increasing awareness of invariance testing, professional counselors can more effectively evaluate the strengths and limitations of counseling-related assessments when working with diverse populations. This primer on MI testing was designed to support counseling researchers, educators, practitioners, and students in making informed decisions about test selection, improving screening and assessment in clinical settings, enhancing instructional efforts, and guiding future research.
