History Beyond Trauma (2004) by Davoine and Gaudillière is a groundbreaking, creative contribution to the theory and treatment of trauma, madness, and psychosis. The authors’ profound understanding of extreme states, both in their genesis and implications for treatment, has been unjustly overlooked and neglected within mainstream psychoanalysis. This paper contributes an overview of the singular careers of Davoine and Gaudillière, and also provides a detailed explication of History Beyond Trauma. This masterwork substantiates how devastating pieces of individual, familial, or social history, when cut out of symbolic discourse, constitute traumatic experience. It is only through therapeutic witnessing that unformulated, unrepresented trauma can be inserted into the social link of a transformative human relationship.
