Optimising Production and Nutrition: A Study on African Indigenous Vegetables in Sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract This case study examines the optimisation of African Indigenous Vegetables (AIVs) production in sub-Saharan Africa: a case of Zimbabwe. AIVs are underutilised crops with superior nutritional profiles compared to exotic vegetables. Despite their high nutritional value, including elevated levels of fibre, minerals, vitamins, and micronutrients, these vegetables remain largely uncultivated and excluded from staple diets. The case explores agronomic practices that can optimise both nutritional content and yield, including plant density management, nutrient application strategies, harvesting techniques, and deflowering practices. The case demonstrates how proper cultivation methods can enhance the nutritional quality while maintaining sustainable food production systems that address malnutrition and food security challenges in the region.
