Establishing the consumer research advisory group demonstrated the feasibility of involving older persons and carers in research. Key enablers included addressing logistical challenges, planning for sensory and cognitive needs, fostering inclusivity, and building trust. These findings provide practical guidance for strengthening consumer involvement in healthcare research in the context of global ageing.

OBJECTIVES AND IMPORTANCE OF STUDY: With the global population ageing rapidly, the voices of older persons must be integrated into healthcare research. Consumer involvement can enhance the relevance, quality and policy impact of research. However, there is limited practical guidance on how to meaningfully involve older adults. This study describes the establishment of a consumer research advisory group within an aged care education research program, and explores consumer perspectives on the recruitment, support and involvement of older people in healthcare research. STUDY TYPE: A qualitative descriptive study design was used. METHODS: Data sources included meeting minutes and the research officer logbook documenting the consumer research advisory group's establishment, as well as an online survey of group members exploring their motivations and experiences. RESULTS: Recruitment involved an inclusive expression of interest process, followed by interviews to support diverse representation. Barriers were addressed through remuneration, accessibility adjustments and personalised communication. Members (N = 8) reported positive experiences, and highlighted the importance of a supportive environment, clear orientation and provision of training. Most participants were motivated by a desire to use their lived experience to benefit others. CONCLUSIONS: Establishing the consumer research advisory group demonstrated the feasibility of involving older persons and carers in research. Key enablers included addressing logistical challenges, planning for sensory and cognitive needs, fostering inclusivity, and building trust. These findings provide practical guidance for strengthening consumer involvement in healthcare research in the context of global ageing.
