Alkyl bromide-promoted photocatalyst-free methylation of benzaldehydes with DMSO as the methyl source and solvent is investigated. Mechanistic studies support the origin of methyl from DMSO via a Fenton-like process. Bromo or 2-alkoxy groups enhance the reaction efficiency.
