A step-economical, 1-iodo-2-nitrobenzene-catalyzed cascade synthesis of 1,3-benzothiazines via hypervalent iodine catalysis has been realized. This one-pot method couples benzyl isothiocyanates with (hetero)arenes, offering broad functional-group tolerance and excellent regioselectivity. The protocol exhibits dual benefits: it involves carrying out the reaction in fewer steps and is completely metal-free. It provides a highly efficient and sustainable route to access these valuable heterocycles. Furthermore, mechanistic studies were conducted to elucidate the nature of the active iodine(III) species responsible for this catalytic oxidative transformation.
