A metal-/photocatalyst-free photoinduced C-H carbonylation in HFIP furnishes benzofused lactams/lactones under 365 nm LED irradiation. Detailed mechanistic studies, including control experiments, radical trapping tests, and kinetic analyses, support an HFIP-assisted photoinduced radical pathway, offering a facile strategy for carbonyl group construction.
