The chain polymer [Ni(hfac)2L]n (L = ferrocenyl-substituted nitronyl nitroxide) has been successfully synthesized, completing the triad of isostructural complexes from highly anisotropic Co2+ to isotropic Mn2+. It is shown that even the moderate magnetic anisotropy of Ni2+, combined with exceptionally strong intrachain ferrimagnetic coupling, is sufficient to realize single-chain magnet behavior (blocking temperature of 2.5 K and activation energy barrier of 41 cm-1). Quantum-chemical calculations disclosed particular features of the influence of the coordination environment and/or 3d-electron configuration on the magnetic anisotropy and magnetic exchange interactions.
