In this work, we have presumed hypothetically that crystal field stabilisation energy (CFSE)-induced stability arising from the complexation of the M(TCNQ)2/CF (M = Mn, Fe, Co) electrocatalysts controls their catalytic performance by effecting reaction kinetics for the electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), resulting in superior catalytic activity by Fe(TCNQ)2/CF.
