Rational design of a non-platinum oxygen reduction reaction catalyst is achieved through Cu-N-C supported Cu (Cu/Cu-N-C). Combined density functional theory calculations and experiments reveal weakened oxygen adsorption on Cu/Cu-N-C. The catalyst delivers a half-wave potential of 0.82 V (vs. RHE) and a peak power density of 143 mW cm-2 at 55 °C.
