A novel planar pentacoordinate sulfur (ppS) species with a starlike D 5h symmetry is identified in the Cd 5 S 6 2− cluster. The rare planar hypercoordinate system is stabilized mainly by electrostatic interactions arising from Cd → S charge transfer.
